Destiny was barely<\/i> on my radar.\u00a0\u00a0With kids and a backlog of games<\/a> waiting to be played, I don’t rush out to buy games at full price these days.\u00a0\u00a0On top of that, my latest console is a Wii U.\u00a0 My next purchase was most likely Mario Kart 8 or Super Smash Bros.<\/p>\n

I loved (and still love) the original Halo.\u00a0 It\u2019s a beautiful game, with a strong sense of place and just enough plot to\u00a0suggest the sequel to Aliens<\/em>\u00a0we never got, but secretly wanted.\u00a0 Somehow the\u00a0later Halos\u00a0drifted away from what I most enjoyed about the original \u2013 namely, being alone, almost out of ammo, exploring a strange new environment.\u00a0 With diminishing returns, I\u00a0called it quits\u00a0around Halo 3 and moved on to other games for my sci-fi fix.<\/p>\n

That said, I was still curious.\u00a0 Maybe I would check out this fancy new Halo in all but name eventually, if the reviews were good.\u00a0 But opening the Beta up to any punk with a\u00a0PlayStation Plus\u00a0account\u00a0piqued my interest and I wanted to try it out now.\u00a0 The service had already trained me to slowly download large files, so \u2013 after waiting for hours \u2013 I played Destiny, and liked what little I saw.\u00a0 Then I tried it again the next day, and after progressing to the meat of the demo, I started to love it.\u00a0 I love that the map of the solar system reminds me of Time Bandits<\/em>.\u00a0 I love that the large \u201cKnight\u201d enemies remind me of the Minotaur from Greek mythology.\u00a0 And then Sunday night, the Beta was over, and I began to miss it.<\/p>\n

You can visit proper game review sites<\/a> if you want the full skinny, but for me, Destiny reminds me of what I liked in the original Halo,\u00a0while also feeling new, modern and just different enough that I\u2019m not quite sure where they are going with it.\u00a0 I cannot wait to play more.\u00a0 Well played Bungie.\u00a0 Well played.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
