Colony Wars

While essentially a Wing Commander clone, there is quite a bit to like about Colony Wars, despite its generic, “overthrow the evil empire” plot.  In keeping with its space-sim heritage, there are branching mission paths and five different endings.

The ships, interfaces and logos all have that cool euro-design you’d expect from the house that brought you Wipeout—even if it’s obvious the designers were watching lots of Babylon 5 at the time.  More importantly, the space flight and combat feel great, with a nice variety of spacecraft and missions.

Gameplay can be a bit simplistic at times (i.e. enemy capital ships have no weak points, requiring brute force and stamina to take out), but for the most part you won’t notice.  As icing on the space combat cake, the story bits are narrated by a James Earl Jones sound-alike.
