The Vectrex

vectrexThe Vectrex is unique among home gaming systems.  If you want to play games on a genuine vector screen, the Vectrex really is your only choice—outside of buying a vintage arcade machine.  Lost in the shuffle of consoles vying for prominence at the height of the early 80s videogame “fad”, the system never really caught on.  With less than thirty official games, the novelty of vector gaming would wear thin if it wasn’t for the abundance of hobbyist “homebrew” games that have been created over the years.  If you are looking to acquire a system, here are two sites you’ll want to check out.

In 1996, John Dondzila released Vector Vaders, the first Vectrex homebrew.  He has since written many more, most of them inspired by classic arcade games—both vector and raster.  He also sells Vectrex homebrews by other authors, making his Classic Game Creations website a great first stop if you are looking for more games.

On the flip side, George Pelonis has not been creating for the Vectrex for quite a long as John, but he has become quite prolific recently via Fury Unlimited.  From original works, to never-ported Cinematronics arcade games, to custom controllers, you’ll find plenty to choose from.

Cheers,
Ben
